Tyres are so important to be in a road worthy condition to avoid accidents. Some insurance companies may deny a claim if your tyres are found to be illegal and may be considered the tyres lack of tread to be a contributing factor to the accident.
The minimum legal limit for the tread of your tyres is 1.5mm across the entire width of the tyre.
It is quite common for tyres to scrub out on the inner or outer edges when the wheels are not aligned. Even if the rest of the tyre is above the limit your tyre is still un-roadworthy if the outer edge is below the legal limit.
Rotating your tyres prolongs the life of the tyres and assists in even wear of the tyre surface. It is recommended to be done when your vehicle is serviced, typically every 6 months or 10,000kms.
Keeping tyre inflation levels at the correct level will also help with prolonging the life of your tyres. You can find the level that your tyres need to be inflated to in your owner’s manual or on the tyre placard. This may be mounted in the glove box of the vehicle or in the door jam.
